Strategies and Reasons for Implementing Hybrid Clouds

Hybrid Cloud and how it fits with public and private cloud strategiesOne of the biggest concerns of organizations examining the option of cloud computing is how to preserve the security of sensitive information, especially since the preferred architecture is to use a hybrid cloud that includes a publicly available network seamlessly integrated with a private cloud, where the latter provides higher level of security. A common misconception is that joining the two is a difficult process, when the fact is that there are several ways to accomplish the fusion. Here is a study we put together for private, public, and hybrid clouds in a infographic format.

The major benefits of a hybrid cloud approach can be summed up in 4 ways:

  • Flexibility – Seamlessly switching between public and private clouds.
  • Cost Efficiency – Achieving maximum performance at the lowest price.
  • Scalability – Easily scale up or down depending on real-time needs without committing an upfront infrastructure build out.
  • Security – Maintain maximum security while providing access to public clouds and services.

Ways to Implement a Hybrid Cloud

Choosing the method which works best will depend on the resources of the individual organization, and what is expected from both the public and private clouds. The basic methods are fairly straightforward:

  • Public and private cloud services are provided by different vendors, and then integrated into one service.
  • A single vendor offers both public and private clouds in one package.
  • The organization provides and manages its own private cloud, then integrates with public cloud services offered by vendors.

The Purpose of the Public Cloud

The public cloud is ideal for all data that has a low security profile. Because a public cloud is more scalable and cost efficient, it is an excellent way to provide a majority of information to internal and/or external clients. Public clouds also provide rapid scalability without the upfront CAPEX required with a 100% private cloud infrastructure.

The Purpose of the Private Cloud

Data confined to a private cloud might include sensitive information such as customer data, e-commerce platform, and company-specific applications and databases. In the hybrid cloud, data requests are evaluated and then redirected to the appropriate public or private cloud. In essence, the primary purpose of the private portion of the cloud is evaluation, while data transfers take place in the corresponding public or private cloud.

Hybrid Clouds Offer More

Program compatibility, customer access, and data throughput are 3 of the major reasons given by VMware to adopt a hybrid cloud strategy. The same article goes on to explain how hybrid solutions reduce corporate risks and costs but do not incur additional maintenance or management over the existing infrastructure. For enterprise applications and data centers, there are no other options providing the same benefits as hybrid solutions.

A decision to go with a hybrid cloud strategy requires IT managers to also understand and plan what a hybrid cloud means from their perspective. A solid hybrid cloud strategy is only viable if the supporting components of the project are solid, such as the IP connectivity of the components that power the hybrid clouds over public or private WAN connectivity, which we will explore in our next article.

  1. I think a top priority for most businesses would be security. There are some things that you need to protect in your network. This is why I think hybrid clouds are appealing to many different businesses.

    1. Thank you for your comment Kenneth! Yes, absolutely, security is a major driver in private clouds vs public clouds. I believe public clouds are unavoidable because of the value they offer and as a result hybrid clouds are unavoidable for enterprises.
