Multi-WAN buying guide
Mushroom Networks vs Peplink vs Speedify: bonding comparison
For deployments that need three or four embedded cellular connections, Mushroom’s Portabella 4000i 5G family offers a practical hardware advantage over the dual-modem Peplink BR2 Pro. Its integrated router, adaptive application profiles and choice of cloud or customer-hosted bonding endpoints provide a complete network design for connected devices. The comparison below explains where those differences matter and what to verify in the proposed configuration.

Where Mushroom has a practical advantage
For a shared network requiring three or four embedded cellular paths and application-specific bonding, Portabella is the stronger fit among the named hardware examples. The advantage is the specified equipment and service design; measure useful speed and application continuity in the intended deployment.
Start with the exact model and deployment
The hardware examples are Mushroom Portabella 4000i 5G and Peplink BR2 Pro. Speedify is shown as a device app and as Speedify for Routers on supported hardware. These examples do not describe every product in any vendor’s range.
On smaller screens, scroll tables sideways to read all columns.
| Decision | Mushroom Portabella 4000i 5G | Peplink BR2 Pro | Speedify app / for Routers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | A physical router serving connected LAN devices. | A physical router serving connected LAN devices. | Apps for computers and phones; router software can serve a whole LAN on compatible hardware. |
| Embedded cellular modems | Four embedded 5G modems with LTE fallback. The family also offers three-modem 3000i 5G and two-modem 2000i 5G configurations. | Two embedded 5G modems. Redundant SIM slots or eSIM profiles are separate from the active modem count. | A software licence does not supply modems. Available connections depend on the host, adapters and selected router hardware. |
| Other WAN inputs | One Ethernet WAN and built-in Wi-Fi WAN; confirm the intended interface configuration. | Ethernet, Wi-Fi and USB WAN options. The vendor also describes an external MAX Adapter option. | Uses supported connections exposed to the host, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet and cellular/tethering. Router compatibility is constrained by OS and processor architecture. |
| Carrier and regional fit | Confirm the ordered modem, bands, antennas, carrier acceptance, APN and service plan. | Check the exact product code, regional modem/bands and carrier certifications. | Check the modem/phone/router providing each connection and its carrier plan; software does not change its radio compatibility. |
Count active WAN paths, not SIM slots. Spare SIMs and eSIM profiles can provide subscription choices without creating additional simultaneous radio connections. A higher modem count also does not establish higher useful throughput in a given location.
For fixed Ethernet WAN deployments, review the Truffle range separately. Peplink’s other router families and software offerings have their own specifications; this comparison uses BR2 Pro.
Distinguish bonding, load balancing and redundancy
Load balancing distributes separate sessions across WANs. Packet-level bonding can carry packets from one session across several paths through a compatible endpoint. Sending extra copies for resilience uses capacity differently from sending distinct payload over each path.
| Option | Published approach | Decision to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mushroom Networks | Standalone session-based load balancing; peered packet-level bonding through BBS or a customer-hosted relay. Application profiles adapt traffic handling to changing WAN conditions. | Required data, voice or video profile; which flows use the tunnel; return routes, QoS and active encryption configuration. |
| Peplink SpeedFusion | Bandwidth Bonding distributes packets across paths. Smoothing uses redundant packets; Hot Failover and Boost address different resilience/throughput needs. | Enabled functions on the quoted router, firmware and endpoint; profile, redundancy overhead and entitlement requirements. |
| Speedify | Channel bonding supports single-session traffic. Speed, Redundant and Streaming modes balance throughput and reliability differently. | Selected mode, eligible connections, application routing, host limits and endpoint choice. |
All three approaches depend on the usable paths, selected profile and endpoint. A router or tunnel staying “up” does not prove that a call or stream remained usable. Verify the real application during degradation, loss and recovery.
Keep the encoder separate from the network transport
The two hardware examples above are network routers. For Mushroom live-video deployments, current Streamer models use an external encoder and the selected video software/relay configuration; archived Streamer PRO hardware is a different product. Current Streamer video workflow explains that workflow.
With any proposed setup, specify the camera input, encoder, stream protocol, receiver/CDN, bitrate and allowed production delay. Confirm each component’s role rather than assuming “bonding” includes video encoding, decoding or CDN service.
Choose the relay, hosting responsibility and IP behaviour
A bonding endpoint receives and reassembles traffic carried over the WAN paths. Its location, capacity, availability and route to the destination matter alongside the local device.
| Option | Managed / cloud path | Customer-hosted path | Static IP and inbound access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mushroom Networks | BBS peers the appliance with a Mushroom relay. | A compatible physical or virtual Mushroom endpoint can be hosted in the customer network/data centre. | The selected cloud/data-centre IP can be mapped through the configured tunnel. Confirm service, routes, port mapping and firewall rules. |
| Peplink | SpeedFusion Connect supplies cloud endpoints for compatible devices/plans. | FusionHub provides a virtual endpoint in public/private cloud or a customer data centre. | Ask for the exact endpoint’s egress IP and inbound design. Do not assume that every cloud plan includes the same dedicated/static address or forwarding service. |
| Speedify | Shared Speedify Cloud or a managed Dedicated Server add-on. | A Self-Hosted Server add-on runs on customer-controlled hardware/cloud. | The vendor lists no static IP for the shared service; Dedicated includes static IPv4 and port forwarding. Self-hosted addressing/forwarding also requires the hosting/network setup. |
For every option, confirm where traffic leaves the tunnel and what happens to addressing if the endpoint changes. Test outbound allowlists and inbound access separately. A surviving WAN alone cannot maintain the application if the selected endpoint or required route is unavailable.
Compare the complete licence and operating cost
Request a quote covering the same WAN count, application profile, endpoint, support period and expected usage. Hardware price alone omits carrier service, hosting, software options and ongoing operation.
| Option | Published structure | Ask before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Mushroom Networks | Appliance plus the selected bonding/relay service and application options. BBS has a low, fixed monthly service fee, with no variable charge based on data usage. | Exact modem configuration; bonding/video options; cloud versus hosted endpoint; licence duration; firmware/management access; support scope and renewal terms. Carrier and customer-hosting charges remain separate. |
| Peplink | BR2 Pro feature entitlements/care plans depend on the offering. SpeedFusion Connect offers both allowance-based and unlimited cloud plans. FusionHub has separate licensing and software-warranty options. | Included term, renewal/expiry behaviour, peers, cloud data/speed/validity limits, InControl access, support and hosting responsibility. |
| Speedify | App/account plans or router subscription. Router cloud plans have prioritized monthly-data tiers; managed Dedicated and Self-Hosted Server options are paid add-ons. Self-hosted traffic is not metered against the subscription allowance. | Covered users/devices/routers, usage allowance, endpoint fees, compatible OS updates, support and who maintains host/router, adapters and server. |
For all vendors, record the active security profile, admin access policy, update process and management telemetry. Confirm the support channel, hours, escalation path, replacement arrangements and responsibilities for third-party WANs. These items should be explicit in the proposal rather than inferred from a feature name.
Choose for the required network, then validate the result
Choose Portabella when the requirement is an integrated, shared-network appliance with three or four embedded cellular paths and Mushroom’s application-specific bonding options. Its modem configurations, adaptive profiles and BBS billing address those requirements directly.
A dual-modem design can fit a smaller connection requirement. Software on existing compatible hardware can fit a device-level or router deployment. Those are different starting configurations; compare the exact equipment, service and support needed to meet the same workload.
For Mushroom live video, select the current Streamer configuration and external encoder workflow. For fixed Ethernet WANs, choose the appropriate Truffle model. Keep the network design aligned with the application rather than treating every bonding product as interchangeable.
A fair proof-of-concept checklist
- Fix the exact models, firmware, WAN providers, site/antenna conditions, endpoint location, encryption and application/QoS profiles.
- Measure each WAN baseline, then single-session and concurrent throughput in both directions. Use the same workload and observation points.
- Observe the actual voice/video/data application during link impairment, disconnect, restoration and endpoint failure. Record useful delivered payload, delay, interruptions and IP behaviour.
- Account for duplicate packets, tunnel overhead and carrier/hosting usage. Keep raw results and repeat the trials; do not compare unlike brochure maxima as a speed ranking.
