Virtual Leased Line

  • Connect your branch offices to your HQ/Data Center via bonded WAN.
  • Combine MPLS, DSL, Cable for optimized VPN and VOIP.
  • Orchestrate branch office WANs for cost, performance and reliability.

The Virtual Leased Line (VLL) provides secure, fast and reliable office to office VPN connectivity between multiple locations via creating an IP tunnel that uses the bonded Internet access lines available on each side. VLL can enable a bonded VPN Internet pipe between two office locations or between the office and its Internet Data Center via the Truffle customer premise equipments installed at the end-points. VLL can bond any type of Internet access line from any service providers including DSL, Cable, T1, E1, MPLS etc., without requiring any coordination with the ISPs. VLL IP tunnel supports star and mesh topologies for office to office VPN. VLL supports encryption or can work transparently with your existing VPN to accomplish VPN bonding.

Virtual Leased Line provides a quick Return on Investment (ROI) and lower operating expenses as an alternative to T1 based point to point leased lines. VLL IP tunnel can be used in conjunction to MPLS or as an alternative to MPLS. The total subscription costs of multiple broadband Internet access lines are often substantially less than a single high-speed Internet access line of equivalent bandwidth. The payback period on the investment is often measured in months. You can download application notes and ROI analysis white-papers from the link below for:
Aggregated Point-to-multipoint Capacity - Truffle can peer over the Internet with other Truffle devices that has VLL server license (such as a head-quarter office and the branch offices) to create an IP tunnel for office to office VPN. In this peered mode, all uplink and downlink traffic between the head-quarter office and branch office/colo location(s), including VPNs, will use the aggregated bandwidth of the combined Internet access links.

VLL is an overlay tunnel for VPN bonding

Link failure recovery - In case of Internet access line failures in one of the Internet access lines within the IP tunnel, Virtual Leased Line (VLL) recovers the ongoing session by redistributing the load over the available access lines, even for the sessions in progress, without loss of data integrity. This means your office to office VPN will be kept alive even during individual WAN failures.

Improved network reliability - Automatic failover protects against failures of one or more access link outages, as it will not cause failure of the aggregated access link as long as at least one access link is still active, resulting in less downtime for the connection between BBNA devices.

Transparent Installation - The existing Local Area Network in the head-quarter office or the branch office/colo does not require any changes. All the installation and configuration is handled through the BBNA user interface.

No coordination with ISP - No new equipment or software is necessary from the Internet Service Provider(s). A user-friendly web-based management interface is provided for quick and easy configuration and system monitoring.

Advanced QoS algorithms - All traffic routed through the TRUFFLE BBNA is intelligently managed to prioritize real-time traffic. Additionally a unique set of proprietary algorithms are implemented to improve traffic latency metrics.

DNS load balancing for inbound requests - TRUFFLE BBNA can be easily configured to provide Dynamic DNS load-balancing for inbound requests for internally hosted servers such as web-server, ftp-server, mail-server etc.

Additional features include: DHCP server (can be turned off), state-full firewall (can be turned off), port forwarding, DMZ, UPnP support and others.

  1. Let's say I have 6 DSL lines in my branch office with 6Mbps downlink 768Kbps uplink speed each, after I install VLL, how fast will I be able to connect to my HeadQuarters over the IP tunnel? When you install Truffle at the HeadQuarter and branch office, VLL will create an aggregate pipe between your branch office and headquarters. Therefore you will be able to download with 6 x 6Mbps = 36 Mbps from your headquarters (provided the HQ connection is faster than 36Mbps) and you will be able to upload with 6 x 768Kbps = 4.6Mbps. Additionally, your branch office will enjoy 36 Mbps of http downlink speed from the Internet.
  2. How many LAN interfaces does the Truffle support? Two. In order to provide aggregated Internet access to more than two local devices, the uplink port of a router or switch can be connected to the Truffle, and the local devices can plug into the router or switch, including a wireless router for wireless access.
  3. Does all the office locations that are connected via VLL require Truffle devices? In general, no, not every office requires the Truffle. Each pair of offices that need the bonded VLL pipe between them will require Truffle. If Truffle is not paired with another Truffle, it will act in the standalone mode.
  4. How about VPN connections, can VLL spread my VPN traffic over all my connections? Yes. VLL is a fully bonded IP tunnel for office to office VPN traffic.
  5. What types of addresses does Truffle support? Truffle supports DHCP, PPPoE and static IPv4 addresses assigned from your ISP. The Truffle can be configured appropriately through the web-based management interface. In the case of a static address, the LAN port of the Truffle can be connected to a switch, and devices connected to the switch can be publicly addressed from the Internet through their statically assigned IP addresses. By default, however, the Truffle uses DHCP to obtain a dynamic IP address on each Internet access line.
  6. Does the Truffle support port forwarding? Yes; port forwarding on the Truffle is configurable through the web-based management interface.
  7. Is the Truffle designed to be compatible with my existing LAN equipment such as routers, switches and firewalls? Yes. Any LAN interface on the Truffle simply replaces the Ethernet port on a DSL modem or cable modem, in an existing LAN configuration with only one Internet access line.
  8. Do I need to order anything special from my ISP to use the Truffle? No. The Truffle is a stand-alone product that does not require any special software, hardware, or configuration from the ISP(s). All that is required is the acquisition of a standard broadband Internet access service, such as provided by DSL or a cable-modem.
  9. Does the Truffle offer DHCP service on the LAN interface? The DHCP server is enabled by default, but may be disabled, or configured to use a certain range which will not conflict with statically configured devices on your LAN.
  10. Will I need to reconfigure my existing network to install the Truffle? No. The Truffle supports a "Pass Through" mode of installation, for which no changes are required to the existing office data network. No changes to firewall settings or IP address re-assignment is required with the Pass Through mode. The Pass Through mode was designed to accomodate existing local office networks which fomerly had a single WAN connection to the Internet. In the Pass Through mode, the Truffle is installed in-line between the legacy WAN modem and the legacy firewall/gateway router. The Truffle is configured in this case by entering the IP address of the legacy WAN modem and the IP address of the legacy firewall/gateway router through the web-based Management Interface. Additional WAN modems can be plugged in to the Truffle for enhanced performance and reliability on an as-needed basis, and will automatically be available to the legacy data network in the office.
  11. Besides the Broadband Bonding®, does Truffle also provide inbound DNS load-balancing? Yes.
  12. What happens if I have a fast connection in my HeadQuarters (or Internet Data Center colo) such as fiber or DS3 and I funnel all my branch office traffic through that location. Will VLL help in this scenario? Absolutely. The VLL created by having Truffle units on each end, i.e. your branch office and in your HeadQuarter (or IDC colo) will enable all the traffic from/to your branch office that is funneled trough the HQ or IDC to be bonded. If your branch office is accessing the public Internet through your HQ or colo (let's say through a VPN), the branch office will enjoy bonded speeds not only for point to point connection to the HQ or colo, but for the traffic to/from the public Internet as well.
  13. What does VLL stand for? Virtual Leased Line.
